After my school was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, I found that I had a lot of work that I needed to do using methods that I was not accustomed to. Staying on top of assignments and getting them done in a timely and efficient manner were just a couple of problems that I had. Jared was recommended to me as a great resource so I reached out to him and he really helped me regain control of my schoolwork by helping me organize my time and set goals. I met Jared Kallen one year ago in late August. It's truly shocking that Jared and I have only known each other for one year because he has made such a profound impact on my life and has enabled me to succeed in the future by providing me with the tools and guidance that any young person needs in their early-20's. It feels like I've known him my whole life. Jared and I were able to connect right off the bat, as we got along on a personal level and he seemed to always find innovative and creative methods to help motivate me through a myriad of challenges. Jared always challenges me to be better, to try harder, or maybe to just think or approach a situation from an alternate perspective. Although he was initially hired by my family to be a tutor/mentor figure in my life, our relationship became a lot deeper than that and it didn't take long for me to realize how incredible of a human being Jared Kallen is. I had taken a semester off from school due to personal reasons and I was returning to GW last fall with an opportunity to graduate in May and pursue career opportunities that I was highly interested in. However, school had never really been my forte and I always found myself incredibly uninterested in the classes and subjects that I was required to take in order to graduate. However, I knew that I needed to finish my coursework and attain my degree if I wanted achieve any semblance of success in my life. I just had no idea how I was going to accomplish all of this – I didn’t have the tools. However, meeting Jared changed everything for me. He began to hold me accountable for my actions both inside and outside of the classroom but was able to deliver the message of accountability while also showing me tremendous support and helping ease the pressure off me through his "day by day" approach. Jared was able to create a comfortable and open dynamic with me, and he is truly someone I can say that I fully trust with my life. Ultimately, I was able to graduate in May with the best grades I've ever received in school, but Jared's impact had deeper implications on my life than just academic success. Jared taught me how to hold myself accountable and how to manage my life considering I am diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and ADHD. One of the main things Jared taught me is that although those diagnoses are real and do have an effect on my life, it's not something that I can control. Jared challenged me to focus on the important things in my life--the things that I could control: especially my own actions. Through Jared's assistance and a lot of hard work on my end, I feel like a completely different person than who I was a year ago today.
